It's working!
Goodwill’s regional headquarters in Astoria, NY, is a study in community-building through activism. Within the main building are a host of services designed to support our clients and also our local community.
At Goodwill’s Family Learning Center, we offer job-readiness training and computer skills training programs free of charge, and a children’s experience room is available, free as well. Our continuing day treatment program treats people with severe depression and other psychiatric difficulties, and we offer employment programs for people with disabilities including the developmentally disabled, mentally ill, blind/vision impaired, people who are hard of hearing and those with physical disabilities. Also located on our campus is a branch of the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and the Steinway Child and Family Services Mental Health Clinic.
Goodwill programs for youth serve more than 12,000 children and families with 24 programs, including services based in six area schools. More than 400 children take part in our summer camps program. Recently, Goodwill initiated a series of college tours, taking 70 students a year from our community to visit 12 college campuses. Additionally, we place over 700 youth in employment.
In the Two Coves Community of Astoria, Goodwill’s community development initiative has helped restore the Whitey Ford baseball field, where Goodwill’s league of eight regular and two instructional teams has 120 girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 14 enrolled. Our local triangle park has been transformed as have 50 area catch basins, which have been replaced, repaired and cleaned. Our busiest crosswalk is enhanced with audio capability to better serve our blind/hearing-impaired population.
