NYU STUDENTS’ END OF SCHOOL YEAR
CAST-OFFS TO GO TO GOODWILL
Goodwill Places Over 100 Bins in all NYU Dorms to Collect Reusable Items
New York, NY: Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey took part in the Green Apple Move Out to collect students’ unwanted reusable items from May 1-17. The New York University group invited Goodwill to participate in the end-of-school-year recycling event for the second year in a row. The nonprofit organization expects to receive 30,000 pounds of gently used clothing, bedding, and small appliances and furniture. Income from sales of the donated items will support Goodwill programs.
"We appreciate the opportunity to help NYU students turn their discards into time cards for the job-seekers we serve,” says Mauricio Hernandez, Goodwill’s senior vice president of Retail Sales. “Goodwill NY-NJ has encouraged New Yorkers to reuse and recycle since 1915,” he adds. “It’s exciting to work with a new generation to create greener communities."
Green Apple Move Out invited Goodwill to place bins in six residence halls last year. The nonprofit organization collected eight tons of reusable goods. The event took place in ten dorms and was sponsored through a grant secured by the university’s Sustainability Task Force. Starting this year, the annual event is coordinated by the university’s Facility and Construction Management and run from its Recycling Shop.
Goodwill sells donated clothing and household goods in 36 retail stores located in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and the Capital District of New York. Locate the closest Goodwill store at /findgoodwill.aspx.
