LONG ISLAND ATHLETE RUNS LACROSSE CLINIC
FOR GOODWILL PROGRAMS PARTICIPANTS
The High School Graduate Will Train Inner-City Girls From Queens
Astoria, NY – Caitlin Forrester, distinguished Lacrosse athlete and recent high school graduate from Long Island, ran a week-long clinic starting on July 12 for girls ages 8-12 participating in summer programs at Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey. The clinic took place at Astoria, Queens with morning and afternoon sessions. Each group included approximately ten girls from the Goodwill summer camp program.
Goodwill Sports Programs provide an opportunity for young people between the ages of 5 and 21 to participate in team sports. They learn the basic principles of baseball, basketball, flag football, cheerleading, tennis, golf and soccer. The clinics teach skills that strive to develop a sense of fair play, team work, motivation and commitment which has a positive impact on their academic performance.
Karen Means, Goodwill’s senior vice president of Youth and Community Development says:
“We hope this clinic will spark an interest in a sport that provides a great deal of opportunity for girls going to college.” This clinic follows-up an earlier program to develop good eating habits among elementary school girls from Goodwill programs.
Ms. Forrester, a Huntington, New York eighteen year-old resident, has played lacrosse for ten years. She graduated from St. Anthonys High School last month and plans to attend The College of The Holy Cross this fall.
Ms. Forrester received the Best Defensive Player award of the St. Anthonys girls Junior Varsity lacrosse team her freshman year of high school. She won two consecutive championships while playing on the school’s girls Varsity lacrosse team the next three years and was recently cited as St. Anthonys Distinguished Student Athlete. “I want to share my sports skills and love for the game with these young girls and help them grow to love Lacrosse too!” she comments.
