Education + Literacy It's Working!


Brooklyn Workforce 1 Career Center
Managed by Goodwill for the New York City Department of Small Business Services, the Brooklyn Workforce 1 Career Center provides all the workforce services New Yorkers need in one location. Career counseling, training, job placements and educational advancement resources as well as workforce services for businesses are included. Also collaborating on the One-Stop Centers are the New York State Department of Labor and City University of New York as well as a number of other partner organizations.

GoodTemps
Based in midtown Manhattan, GoodTemps is a contractual temporary staffing service and a significant source of jobs for persons with disabilities, seniors and those with barriers to employment. Providing short- and long-term employment opportunities throughout the metropolitan area, GoodTemps covers all five boroughs of New York City, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and Northern New Jersey. Positions vary from office/clerical to professional, from labor to retail, technical and more.

United Way NYCWorks Program
NYCWorks was developed to assist unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers with training and job placements. Funded by United Way, the Brooklyn-based Goodwill program is conducted in partnership with LEAP and New York City Technical College.

Blind & Visually Impaired Program
Open to persons referred by the New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, the VIP program assists people seeking competitive or supported employment positions. Based in Astoria, the program is open to the people of all five boroughs and focuses on finding jobs for people in their own communities. The program offers pre-employment counseling, work readiness skills training, intensive on-site job coaching and extended services.

Deaf Services
Goodwill’s support services for the deaf include development and implementation of vocational goals and plans, career exploration, placement and job coaching. Communication assistance between an employee and their employer is available for several months after placement.

Back to Work
These three training and job placement centers assist New Yorkers referred by the Human Resources Administration (HRA) move from public assistance to viable employment. Job Developers work with participants to assist them in finding appropriate positions considering their skills, interests and abilities. Employment retention services are provided for six months to help overcome difficulties or secure a more skilled position.

Refugee Social Services Program (RSSP)
Goodwill’s Refugee Social Services Program offers career planning, training and placement to refugees and persons who have obtained political asylum. Located in the Bronx and Brooklyn, RSSP is open to all refugees who have been in the U.S. less than five years, regardless of place of residence or ethnicity. Many current program participants are of Eastern European descent; Goodwill’s staff is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian and Latvian, and interpreters can be made available to serve participants speaking other languages. Employment preparation workshops cover job search basics, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation. Training includes English as a Second Language and basic computer, home health aide and other vocational skills. RSSP participants have been successfully placed as programmers, engineers, bookkeepers, technicians, document specialists, administrative assistants, maintenance workers, home attendants/health aides, and law, medical and stock clerks.

Targeted Assistance Grant (TAG)
This program is similar in its mission to the Refugee Social Services Program, with a special goal of moving participants from public assistance to work. Located in the Bronx and Brooklyn, TAG provides direct services to refugees through job placements, resulting in economic self-sufficiency. In addition to all RSSP services, TAG participants receive intensive computer training.

HempsteadWorks Career Center
A full-service One-Stop Center, the HempsteadWorks Career Center, is a network of organizations that meet the needs of both job seekers and employers. The center offers career counseling, referrals and information about the job market, child care, transportation and financial assistance. Job search resources include a computerized job bank, internet access, resume and cover letter-writing software, job search videos and CDs, as well as use of available telephones, photocopy and fax machines. The HempsteadWorks Career Center also assists employers in hiring qualified workers and developing employer-based skills training programs. Located at the Town of Hempstead Department of Occupational Resources’ central facility in Hempstead.

Transitional Employment & Mentoring for Ex-Offenders (Project TEAM)
Project TEAM assists nonviolent ex-offenders from Northern New Jersey who are returning to their local communities. Funded through the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration, the Harrison-based program offers participants support and resources to find employment and stable housing and provides them with counseling, mentoring, vocational or educational training, and other support services. To participate, individuals must be nonviolent offenders who are at least 18 years old and were released from a correctional facility within the past 180 days.

WeCare
To help persons with disabilities move from public assistance into jobs, Goodwill does vocational evaluation and assessment with participants to determine what services they need in order to achieve work readiness and employment. Those who can work receive work experience training and are placed in jobs after, or are enrolled in a work-based education program that combines on-the-job experience with classroom instruction.

Supported Employment
Supported Employment works to find competitive employment positions for people with severe disabilities. Once on the job, Goodwill provides one-on-one job coaching to help each individual become as independent as possible to succeed. Goodwill’s Supported Employment Division works with many disability types. These include persons with mental retardation, development disabilities, mental illness, visual impairment, hearing impairment and many others.

Assisted Competitive Employment
This supported employment program provides a job coach and other support services to individuals with mental illness, helping them gain the opportunity to work in a competitive employment workplace.

Extended Rehabilitation Services
Goodwill’s on-site industries, including contributed goods, industrial contracts and porter/ maintenance, offer program participants the opportunity to gain work experience and earn money while receiving case management services.

Your Employment Solution (YES)
Available in all boroughs, YES provides direct placement assistance to individuals who are ready for competitive employment but still need help locating and securing the right opportunities. VESID referral is required.

Member for Life Program
Every participant in a Goodwill program automatically becomes a Member for Life. This original Goodwill program is designed to track our graduates after they have been placed in jobs to help measure the effectiveness of our work and to offer a ‘lifeline’ to our clients. Members are registered automatically.

WIPA – Queens and Brooklyn: “The WORK Advocate”
The WORK Advocate is a Social Security Administration/SSA-funded WIPA program to assist SSI/SSDI beneficiaries in the use of SSA work incentives (e.g., PASS Plans, IRWE, 1619b, Medicaid Buy-in, etc.) to achieve employment. Referrals for employment may be made to VESID, Workforce1 Career Centers, and other New York City agencies that provide job placement services, including Goodwill.

NYS Intensive Employment Program for Refugees Living with Disabilities
This program helps refugees with physical and developmental disabilities to integrate into mainstream U.S. culture through their transition to permanent employment and economic self-sufficiency while reducing stigmas and cultural barriers. 

The program provides workforce training on core professional/vocational skills, Vocational English Language, and Computer Literacy to maximize participant’s employment potential. Job developers effectively match participant’s skills and capabilities with suitable employment positions.  Employment subsidies are available.
