Programs for Teens
With funding from a variety of public and private sources, Goodwill Industries has developed many exciting programs to help young people make the transition from child to adult.

With an understanding that adolescence is one of the most difficult times of life, our programs are designed to help teens realize their personal, academic and career goals while connecting them with caring adults. Our programs engage, excite and enhance the world that our teens experience.

Boys 2 Men
Boys 2 Men is a youth mentoring group with a focus on Black and Latino males. The program provides positive role models for young men, ages 13-19. Critical thinking, self-esteem, respect, and personal and academic achievement are goals pursued by the program.

Good Books
Funded by the legendary music producer, Pharrell Williams, and Nike, Good Books provides a forum for young people to explore the literary world. Participants are encouraged to read from a variety of works to help them develop their vocabulary, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills. Students participate in events that include college tours, read-a-thons, book fairs and a trip to the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.

Summer Youth Employment Program
This program provides jobs for young people ages 14-21 for seven weeks during the summer. Participants are placed in entry-level positions in private industry, government/city agencies and community-based organizations. Goodwill’s Summer Youth Employment Program lays the foundation most of our young people will build on for the rest of their lives. In July and August, young people who are about to enter the workforce have the opportunity to develop basic job skills while earning income for themselves.

Family Literacy at Beacon 149
Family Literacy at PS 149 Beacon works with selected families to address the educational and individual needs of parents and their school children. The goals are to enrich language and literacy skills and to increase parent and school interaction.

OST at PS40
Out of School Time at PS 40 provides free, structured, educational, recreational and cultural activities after school and during holiday breaks for students who attend PS40.

GOODWILL AFTERSCHOOL / SUMMER CAMP

Afterschool
On school holidays Goodwill provides educational and recreational activities for elementary school age children from Monday to Friday, 3-6pm and 8:30-4:30pm. Educational activities include tutoring and homework help, computer software basics, computer games and also familiarity with technology, educational and recreational field trips, art, dance, math, science, financial literacy and more.

Summer Camp
Summer Camp serves 100 children ages 5-13, during July and August. Children participate in swimming, art, dance, science, reading, math, computers, sports, trips and much more. Lunch is provided daily.

Beacons
Beacon Community Centers provide educational and recreational activities for individuals, ages 6- adult. The Beacon programs operate after school, evenings, weekends and during the summer, and are designed to engage the entire community of the host school. Goodwill Industries operates Beacon programs at PS 149, IS10, IS141 in Region 4, School District 30.

TECHNOLOGY BASED PROGRAMS

Signs and Designs
Signs and Designs is a sign-engraving business designed to help older teens understand the basics of operating a business. Housed at Goodwill’s Astoria headquarters, students learn the sign engraving process on the Hermes IS 400, sales calls, product design, teamwork, and budgeting.

Digital Media Editing
Using state of the art Apple technology & Final Cut Pro Software, teens learn how to develop, shoot and edit material for video projects. An award-winning filmmaker works with students to help them develop ideas and complete their projects.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS

Aces
This youth leadership and community service program for Queens youth is designed to help them increase interpersonal, coping and communication skills. For those leaving high school and moving into young adulthood, it is also designed to help transition them through the often difficult next step. The program provides assistance to help students improve their academic performance with a goal of entering college. In other cases it links them to training programs and helps them find employment and independent living situations.
